Town Council Approves New Master Park Plan

Only three of Leesburg's 16 parks have a plan to date, which is an essential tool in park and recreation development.

The Town Council voted 7 to 0 Tuesday night to adopt a new . It will serve as one of several determining factors in guiding decisions for future parks and recreation funding. To date, only three of Leesburg's parks - Ida Lee, Freedom and Veterans - have a formal plan.

Parks and Public Space Planner Bill Ference said that late last year, it was determined there was a need to develop a plan for each of the 13 sites, while updating the three, which have already been approved.

Council member Tom Dunn said Tuesday that he’d prefer to remove Veterans Park, located at Balls Bluff, from the plan because there needs to be more study at the location.

“I’m a little hesitant to put it in the master plan because of its current state,” he said.

Vice Mayor Kevin Wright suggested an update to the resolution before taking a final vote:

Whereas council has expressed interest in determining historic resources at Veterans Park prior to final development plans.

The recommendation passed unanimously.
