Town Council Members Discuss Joint Meeting

The Town Council discussed a brief follow-up on Monday night regarding their two weeks ago.

Both governing bodies discussed matters of mutual interest including, the coming , and Raspberry Falls residents who have indicated they want the rather than Loudoun Water.
 
Mayor Kristen Umstattd said there has been no further discussion between the board and council regarding these topics. However, Umstattd said she has plans to meet with Chairman Scott York this Friday and suspects there will be discussion on some of the local issues.

Until then, Umstattd said she is not optimistic that the board will be able to help fund the . Although, given the sell-out crowd at Sunday's showing of the documentary "300 Miles to Freedom," there continues to be strong community support. 

As for Comcast, Umstattd said she will be sending a letter that will formally request assistance to help coordinate an effort between the Loudoun County School Board, the Board of Supervisors, and the Town Council to keep broadcasting the three boards' meetings on cable.

In regards to the court house expansion, Umstattd said most council members believe that closing Church Street would be disruptive to the lives of Church and Cornwall residents, as well as the downtown business community.

“I don't believe the Council will agree to that request,” Umstattd said, which was made by the county and courts. “In meetings with Judge Horne, Chairman York, and Circuit Court Clerk Gary Clemens, [Town Manager] John Wells and I have expressed our belief that the closure of Church Street would be wildly unpopular with our downtown community.”

Raspberry Falls also came up in Monday night’s discussion. During the joint meeting, the Board of Supervisors suggested that a task force be created in order to find out where the community stands on the issue. Wells said Monday that once this is done the Town Council will be contacted.  

However, Umstattd said that Loudoun Water will have to decide whether to move forward with their membrane filtering plan. The council is not willing to build a pipeline and operate the Raspberry Falls system, she said.
