Governor, Board of Education Honor 31 Loudoun Schools

Several Leesburg schools were among those awarded last week.

Thirty-one of schools from the Loudoun County school system were among those honored by Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Board of Education recently, including many from Leesburg.

The governor and the Board of Education last week announced the 447 schools and two school divisions that earned 2012 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. This program recognizes schools that far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board.

Seven Loudoun schools received the 2012 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.

To qualify for the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, schools and school divisions must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieve all applicable excellence goals for elementary reading, enrollment in Algebra I by the eighth grade, enrollment in college-level courses, high school graduation, attainment of advanced diplomas, increased attainment of career and industry certifications, and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative. Schools and school divisions earn bonus points for other performance measures, including the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard. There were 86 schools around the state that earned the award.

  • Belmont Station Elementary
  • Lowes Island Elementary
  • Lucketts Elementary
  • Newton-Lee Elementary
  • Pinebrook Elementary
  • Round Hill Elementary
  • Waterford Elementary

Each school that received the Governor’s Award receives a display banner and a signed resolution of commendation from Governor Bob McDonnell. There were no school divisions that qualified for the award.

Two school divisions — Lexington and West Point — and 188 schools earned the Board of Education Excellence Award, the second-tier honor in the VIP program. These schools and divisions also met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.

  • Creighton's Corner Elementary
  • Kenneth W. Culbert Elementary
  • Emerick Elementary
  • Hamilton Elementary
  • Hillside Elementary
  • Horizon Elementary
  • Hutchison Farm Elementary
  • Legacy Elementary
  • Liberty Elementary
  • Lincoln Elementary
  • Little River Elementary
  • Mill Run Elementary
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Sanders Corner Elementary
  • Sycolin Creek Elementary

The 171 schools that earned the Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.

The seven Loudoun schools that received the Competence to Excellence awards include:

  • Briar Woods High School
  • Broad Run High School
  • Hillsboro Elementary
  • Loudoun Valley High School
  • Lovettsville Elementary
  • Stone Bridge High School
