Guitar Concert at Heritage Dedicated to Jim Harmon

The Martha Masters Guitar Concert set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Heritage High School will be dedicated to the memory of former Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Music Supervisor Jim Harmon. The free concert is open to the public.

Harmon, 58, died Feb. 4 after battling with cancer. He served as LCPS music supervisor from 2000 to 2012 when he retired to focus on his health.

The school system attributed remarkable growth in the LCPS music programs under Harmon’s leadership, including the addition of an orchestra program that now serves more than 2,300 students. During Harmon’s tenure the guitar program expanded both in numbers of students and in quality to become recognized as a model for guitar education across the country.

Known for his friendly personality, humor, love of music and beautiful voice, Harmon was a passionate supporter of the arts in education at the local, state and national levels.

He previously served as the choral director of Winchester’s Handley High School starting and was a member of the Frederick County, VA, School Board.

This concert is presented in part by the Augustine Foundation, the Guitar Foundation of America and LCPS. At the end of Masters’ program, a guitar orchestra made up of LCPS students and teachers will perform the world premiere of “Cascade” by Omid Zoufonoun.
