From the Regional Fair, 21 projects compete on the state level and four named Best of Fair go on to the Intel International Fair to be held in May in Phoenix, AZ. The Intel Fair will feature 1,500 students from more than 70 countries showcasing their independent research.

"The fair is a nice way to showcase the work that Loudoun kids are doing," said Odette Scovel,  Science Supervisor for Loudoun County Public Schools.

Scovel explained that many students work on their projects for a year - or longer - through a guided academic process with their teacher mentors. These students were chosen first at their schools then they moved on to the regional level.

Scovel said the students want to come back each year and they get really generous monetary awards.

"The judges are members of the community, many of whom have advanced degrees.  We have judges who have come for 30 years running and they enjoy seeing what the kids  have been learning," Scovel added.
