Get Lola’s Cookies Free Saturday As Bakery Says Goodbye

Award-winning maker of sweets and treats is closing shop with a celebration.

For seven years, Leesburg residents and workers have dropped by the small downtown bakery known as Lola’s Cookies & Treats. Saturday will be their last chance.

Don’t miss Lola’s huge cookie giveaway – just like the one she offered when the shop opened – a thank you for supporters.

“We’re closing this business on a sweet note,” said Lorraine “Lola” Hooper, the bakery’s owner, in a press release. “We’ve loved being part of our customer’s lives — and we want to give Leesburg one last treat.”

The event starts at noon Saturday. Staff members give the cookies away – one for each person. And there will be T-shirt giveaways. Customers are invited to leave written messages in a book of memories at the store.

The party runs until 4 p.m., when Hooper will close the doors for good.

“We had business challenges that were looking like they were destined to increase and at the same time my family is needing me more,” Hooper said, explaining why she was shuttering the business. “It would have taken more time and resources to continue than I could commit, so that was it.”

Lola Cookies & Treats began in 2002, when Hooper began selling her 100 percent made-from-scratch cookies from a stand at the Leesburg Farmers’ Market. By 2006, the bakery opened downtown.

Lola’s has been selected in Washingtonian magazine’s “Best of Leesburg,” had its cupcakes featured on the cover of Loudoun Magazine and even received a nod from Rachel Ray.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute,” Hooper said. “Lola’s has made many people happy.”

What next for Hooper?

“A lot of rest, I hope,” she said, adding that the coming holidays will garner her immediate attention. “A nice Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family. I'm thinking about making a cookbook with recipes from the bakery, so that might be a project; so many people have asked for recipes!! And then, we'll see what inspires me next.”

So head out to Lola’s – 109 South King Street, at the corner of Royal Street – from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, for one last tasty treat. For more information, visit Lola’s website.
