Chris Cooley Returns to Redskins Lineup

Placement of Davis on reserve/injury list opens spot for franchise-leading tight end.

As the NFL reaches mid-season, the Washington Redskins on Monday announced the return of free agent . The news came as the coaches decided to place tight end Fred Davis on the reserve/injured list.

“I called Chris when we landed. I asked him what type of shape he was in,” head coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement released by the team. “He said he was in pretty good shape. I asked him if he would like to come back. He said he did. We’re excited to have him. I trust Chris. If he says he’s in good shape, he’s in good shape. Hopefully he can help us this next week.”

Cooley spent his first eight seasons with the Redskins and is the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions by a tight end, with 428 receptions for 4,703 yards and 33 receiving touchdowns. Last season, Cooley took Jerry Smith’s place as the franchise leader last season. Cooley holds four of the top five single-season reception totals by a tight end in team history, including recording at least 70 catches in 2005, 2008 and 2010. He also owns an art gallery in Leesburg.
