Good Vs. Evil: Two Free Roller Derby Bouts Saturday in Sterling

The NOVA Roller Derby league raises money for charitable causes, with this month's event benefiting Neighbors Foundation.

Two classic matches of good versus evil are planned at Michael and Son Sportsplex in Dulles Saturday; and to evil’s dismay it’s for a good cause.

This weekend NOVA Roller Derby has planned back-to-back bouts consisting of all-star teams made up of the best skaters in the league. The doors open at 4 p.m. and the first bout begins at 5 p.m. when “The Pretty Princesses” take on “The Evil Queens.”

While members of both teams in the first bout are all female, a second co-ed bout pits the “Super Heroes” against the “Super Villains.”

The teams will consist of skaters from NOVA Roller Derby, DC Rollergirls, Freedom Belles, Chesapeake Roller Derby, Dominion Derby Girls and others, so don’t miss the chance to see skaters from throughout the region display their set of skills.

Both bouts will follow the official rule set of Modern Athletic Derby Endeavor (M.A.D.E.) – a national affiliation of leagues promoting fair, skilled competition.

Tickets are free, so bring a chair and prepare for some fast skating and hard hits! Michael and Son Sportsplex, formerly Dulles Sportsplex, is located at 21610 Atlantic Boulevard in Sterling. Some seating is available, but the league recommends that fans bring their own chairs and arrive early.

As for the good cause, NOVA Roller Derby has a charitable mission focused on people and organizations that have an immediate impact on the community. For July, Neighbors Foundation is NOVA Roller Derby’s charity of the month. Neighbors Foundation provides care packages to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Items requested include coffee, chips, crackers, deodorant, toothpaste, and other non-perishable food and toiletry items. NOVA Roller Derby will be collecting donations at the bout from anyone who wishes to contribute.

Following the roller derby, feel free to join the skaters at Mahalo Cove, 46300 McClellan Way, in Sterling for an after-party. The roller derby admission wristband will admit patrons for no cover before 9 p.m.
