Heritage Baseball Picks up First Win of Season

4-1 victory over Tuscarora due to clutch hitting and strong defense

The Heritage High baseball team collected their first victory of the season on Wednesday night, holding opponent Tuscarora High School to one run.

The Pride’s offense kicked in during the third inning, when first baseman, Shane Carrera, knocked in a two-run single.

The Huskies also scored in the third, putting up their only run of the ballgame on a double to centerfield by shortstop Bernie Mayflower.  It looked as though Tuscarora was threatening to capitalize on a bases loaded one out opportunity in the same inning, but a double play to end the inning got the Pride out of the jam.

The score remained at a standstill of 2-1 until the top of the seventh, when Heritage tacked on two more.  It was again Carrera who came up with a big two- run single, giving his team a more comfortable lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.  Head coach of Heritage, Ryan Price, commented that Carrera’s hitting “carried the team.”

Heritage won on a final score of 4-1, versus home team Tuscarora.

Coach Price was pleased with his team’s first win of the season, saying they “needed it” and it was the “cleanest game” they’ve played thus far.  Price attributes the win to his team “playing all seven innings.” He continued “the pitchers battled and hitters kept us in the game.”

Heritage looks to gain win number two this Friday at home as they take on Osbourn.

The Tuscarora Huskies will try to bounce back quickly as they face Woodgrove tomorrow at home.
