Ida Lee Tennis Team Captures 2012 Morgan Dennis Cup

The  Tennis team claimed the 2012 Morgan Dennis Cup at the Middleburg Tennis Club on Sunday, June 17. With the win, Team Ida Lee broke a ten-year drought in this prestigious event which features competition between club members and staff pros from Chestnut Forks Tennis Club, Middleburg Tennis Club, and Ida Lee’s A.V. Symington Tennis Center.

Team Ida Lee, captained by Kitty Foster, claimed the team overall title with a 10-8 score over the squad from Chestnut Forks. The final scores were calculated by total matches won by each team during the entire weekend. Events included Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Each of the three teams had 8 entries competing in a round-robin format. Host Middleburg finished with 6 points.

Staff Professional Noe Vasquez provided Ida Lee with the winning margin by pulling out a hard-fought win in the final match of the Men’s Singles event. With a large crowd and both teams looking on, Vasquez came from behind to defeat Staff Pro Martin Brown of Chestnut Forks by scores of 2-6, 6-2 and 7-5, clinching the team title for Ida Lee. Chestnut Forks would have won if Brown had taken the match by virtue of a tiebreaker system.

Team Ida Lee members included Vasquez, Susanna Street (Women’s Singles), Jacque Bonds, Molly Merchoir, Liz Sweet, and Kitty Foster (Women’s Doubles), Terry Crowley, Ljudmilla Pavlov, Dina Rivas-Holstead, Bruce Blandin, Steve Solow, and Rod Young (Mixed Doubles), Vinnie Khera, Greg Selby, John Lombardi, and Bill Mabry (Men’s Doubles). 

The Ida Lee team was made up of staff professionals and players who have been active in Ida Lee programs during the previous year. It is one of three events that are held annually between the three clubs.
