The Washington Redskins made the completely expected official today by firing head coach Mike Shanahan after four years and a dismal 3-13 season in 2013.

Owner Daniel Snyder released a statement about the move Monday morning, saying the team would find the “right” coach and that fans deserve.

“Redskins fans deserve a better result,” Snyder said in the statement, thanking Shanahan for his “efforts,” but making it clear that work came up short.

“We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs,” Snyder said.

Executive vice president and general manager Bruce Allen said the team would carefully make it’s next selection.

“We are going to take a smart, step-by-step approach to finding the right coach to return the Redskins to where we believe we should be,” Allen said. “We will analyze accurately and honestly all of the decisions that were made over the past year."

The Washington Post offered up a couple of potential coaching picks here.

What do you think about Shanahan's time in Washington? Who do you think should next take the reins?
