Top Local Riders Compete at Surefire Horse Trials This Weekend

Several top local riders will participate this year, the event's 10th, at Surefire Farm in Purcellville.

Approximately 300 amateur and professional riders will compete this weekend in the Surefire Horse Trials in Purcellville.

The event marks the 10th year for Surefire trials, in which Beginning Novice to Intermediate riders compete in the sport of Eventing, also known as the equestrian triathlon. The competition runs from 8 a.m. until about 4:30 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Intermediate division starts things off Saturday with dressage at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Each division will complete the event’s three phases in one day, with show jumping and cross country following dressage. A number of top riders from the local area will be participating this year, including:

  • Hannah Sue Burnett (Middleburg)
  • Allison Springer (Upperville)
  • Lynn Symansky (Middleburg)
  • Sharon White (Summit Point, WV)

Jan Byyny, a top-ranked international event rider, owns Surefire Farm. Byyny has represented the United States at the Pan American Games where she won team gold and individual bronze, and at numerous international competitions on U.S. Equestrian teams.

Admission to the competition is free for spectators, but donations are requested for parking, with proceeds going to the Philomont Volunteer Fire Department.
