Virginia AG Recount Begins, GOP Mass Meeting for 33rd Senate Seat Monday

Leesburg's Whitbeck and Herndon's Meyer vie for Republican support to replace Herring if his victory stands.

Today, Dec. 16, marks the beginning of the recount process for the Virginia Attorney General’s race in which Sen. Mark Herring (D-33) leads Sen. Mark Obenshain (R-26) by 165 votes, according to the certified tally.

With that process expected to be complete by Friday, Republicans in Virginia’s 33rd Senate District will head to a Mass Meeting tonight in Sterling to choose a nominee to replace Herring if he wins. Democrats previously selected Leesburg attorney Jennifer Wexton as their nominee in a primary.

Leesburg attorney John Whitbeck, who is also chairman of Virginia’s 10th Congressional District Committee, faces Herndon’s Ron Meyer in the GOP Mass Meeting. Del. Joe May (R-33), who lost his bid for reelection, briefly entered the GOP nomination race before deciding to run as an Independent.
