Purcellville Welcomes Loudoun Lyme 5K Race Sunday

For a third year, the race has been organized to raise awareness about Lyme and its impacts.

DryHome Roofing and Siding has planned the 3rd Annual Loudoun Lyme 5K/1M Sunday, May 19, at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for Lyme disease. Lyme is the number one tick-borne illness in the U.S., and affects Loudoun County more than any other county in Virginia. In fact, Loudoun is home to the third-largest number of Lyme cases in the United States. DryHome Roofing and Siding owner Steve Gotschi started the race/walk after watching his wife and many friends battle the disease.   The Loudoun Lyme 5K also features a 1M family walk and informational fair to educate the public about the disease, its causes and treatments. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m…

Drop the Keys, Bike to Work May 17

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the W&OD and leave the car behind Friday.

The annual Bike to Work Day, organized by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, is set for Friday, May 17, and residents all over the Washington, DC, region are encouraged to be one of the more than 10,000 area commuters expected to partcipate. Seventy pit stops are planned throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia with refreshments and opportunities to enter a raffle for a free bicycle. Two pit stops are planned along the W&OD Trail in Loudoun – one in Leesburg and one in Sterling – where participants will find refreshments and prizes. Preakness 2013: At Morven Park’s Party, Horses Provide Therapy

While some of the world’s fastest horses are racing in the 138thPreakness Stakes at Pimlico in Maryland, horses of an entirely different nature will assist those with physical, psychological and cognitive disabilities at Morven Park during Loudoun Therapeutic Riding’s Preakness Party. Dominion High School Welcomes First Field Hockey Game Saturday

Field hockey makes its debut on a Loudoun County Public Schools field as clubs from Briar Woods, Dominion square off.

Potomac Field Hockey (PFH), a local private club, hopes to put a spotlight on the sport in Loudoun with a game between county teams played at Dominion High School’s stadium. Loudoun County's high schools have no field hockey teams, local club teams play under their school banners. The public school systems in several neighboring counties offer field hockey, but Loudoun County Public Schools has not adopted the sport, nor its sister sport ice hockey, which is also played under high school banners through private clubs. Fans are already gathering Churchill Downs for the 2013 Kentucky Derby for the expected 6:24 p.m. post time, but there's still plenty of time to get in on the fun locally for the first leg of the Triple Crown. Leesburg Awaits News About Its Boston Marathon Participants

Explosions at the popular annual race killed three and injured 144 at last count.

Leesburg continues to await updates about 12 runners from the town who were scheduled to participate in Monday’s Boston Marathon, where explosions ended the annual race early. Eight of Leesburg runners managed to finish the marathon before the explosions struck, according to the Boston Marathon’s website. The 117th Boston Marathon began with 26 seconds of silence to honor Sandy Hook victims and about three hours after the first runners finished up, there two explosions near the finish line. At least three people were killed and another 189 injured, according to CNN. Initial reports indicated additional explosive devices had been found, but updates from multiple media outlets have since reported that those other suspicious were not …

Leesburg Marathon Runners Are In Boston

No word on whether the 12 runners from the community were injured in explosions near the finish line.

Eight of 12 runners from Leesburg finished the Boston Marathon Monday before explosions stopped the race. The 117th Boston Marathon began with 26 seconds of silence to honor Sandy Hook victims and about three hours after the first runners finished up, there two explosions near the finish line. Several television reports indicated that two additional devices were located and disarmed. Sadly, the Patriot-Ledger is reporting two booms were heard from inside the Fairmount Copley Hotel near the finish line on Boylston Street. There are also reports of multiple serious injuries, but no word yet on how many people were injured, or whether those injured were spectators or runners.  Lelisa Desisa Benti was the men's winner of the Boston Marathon …
