Tally Ho Theatre to Close Down Sept. 3

The operators, Market Street Productions, have given their notice due to increased competition and little room to grow.

Market Street Productions (MSP), the operators of the Tally Ho Theatre in downtown Leesburg since 2008, have given their notice and will be vacating the theatre effective in early September, 2012. Their last day of operation will be on Monday, Sept. 3. Dave Wright, operations manager for Market Street Productions, cites many reasons for the decision to move, including increasing competition from surrounding multiplex cinemas, the high overhead cost of operating a movie theatre and, most importantly, the eventual conversion from 35MM film to digital projection. “Within the next 12 months, the major studios will no longer produce and ship 35MM film prints and will be 100 percent digital by the end of 2013," Wright said. “Because we do not …

Otter Creek Scheduled to Close

The business, which first opened its doors in 1998, will close for the last time on March 31

Store Owners Fred and Jennifer Frankenfield announced this week that their store, Otter Creek, will close after operating in the Historic District of Leesburg for the past 15 years.  Otter Creek first opened its doors in 1998 in Leesburg’s Eastern Triangle, where Loudoun and Market Streets meet. Fred Frankenfield is an Interior Designer with a love of refinishing and repurposing old things. He began with a collection of antiques and his own one-of-a-kind creations, and grew the business into a multiline of American crafts and furnishings. One of their signature lines has been furniture built from reclaimed barnwood.   “We have furnished hundreds of homes with our harvest tables, huntboards and sofa tables," Frankenfield said. "This …

LTE: Union Leader Criticizes Bloom, Other Delhaize America Closings

Statement from McNutt comes after parent company announces it will close 126 stores and put 4,900 people out of work.

The United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 400 President Tom McNutt issued the following statement Jan. 13 in response to Delhaize America’s decision to close 126 Bloom, Food Lion and Bottom Dollar stores across the country, including the remaining Bloom in Ashburn and one of the two Blooms in Leesburg: “First, let me offer my deepest sympathies to the workers who are losing their jobs as a result of these closings. They have been ill-served by global corporate greed, perpetrated in their case by a multinational conglomerate that treats its workers well in Europe but denies American workers their right to union representation, to earn a living wage, and to job security. “Second, I believe this massive wave of closings demonstrates…

Bloom Shrinks in Loudoun

Ashburn store and one in Leesburg to be shuttered, adding to the glut of retail space.

Delhaize America, the parent company of Bloom and Food Lion, announced this week that it would close 126 stores, including the groceries on Fort Evans Road in Leesburg and at Farmwell Hunt Plaza in Ashburn. The stores will close by Feb. 10. Bloom was a rebranded version of Food Lion that the company now plans to retire. While new stores were opened under that banner, several Bloom stores were revamped Food Lions. Forty-two stores will convert back to Food Lion stores, including the stores on South King Street in Leesburg in Great Falls Plaza in Sterling and on East Main Street in Purcellville. In addition, the Bottom Dollar store in Sterling Park will be converted to a Food Lion. Bloom once had four locations in Loudoun, including two in …
