Northern Virginia was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. As a result, Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Go to its Facebook page or email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name and email address. The …

Inova Blood Donor Services has issued a call for eligible blood donors to visit their local blood center or mobile blood drive to donate blood and/or platelets as soon as possible. Donors may schedule an appointment, or find a blood drive or donor center in proximity by visiting www.inova.org/donateblood or calling 1-866-BLOODSAVES (866-256-6372). “The inventory of blood at Inova has been severely impacted by a lower than normal blood donor participation rate attributable to an unseasonably mild early spring coupled with summer activities and vacations,” according to Terri Craddock, Director, Inova Blood Donor Services. “This has lead to critically low inventory levels of blood and platelets, leaving hospitals vulnerable in response to…

About 200 vehicles are expected to be on display in downtown Leesburg.
At least 200 classic cars and hot rods will head to historic downtown Leesburg this weekend for the 26th Annual Leesburg Classic Car Show and Cruise-In. Muscle cars, dragsters and other vehicles made before 1984 will be at the event, which runs Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. “We always try to have some novelty vehicles and performance vehicles on display,” said event organizer Bob Brown. There is even the possibility that a replica of the Ghostbusters vehicle will be available for viewing. “If that shows up we’ll have it right in the center of town.” The event will take place on King and Market streets, so road closures are scheduled. The event is free and open to the public, however donations are welcome. Brown said that money raised will …

The Loudoun County "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" Community Holiday Coalition is seeking donations by Dec. 9 to help bring a touch of joy this winter to more than 1,750 families hurt by the economic reversals of the past two years. The Coalition hopes to provide new clothing, toys, warm winter hats and gloves, and more to 3,900 children ranging in age from newborns to teens. In addition, it plans to provide warm clothing and gifts for more than 450 seniors and adults with disabilities. I have two booklets from watch dog organizations which rate/evaluate non-profit organizations, in terms of their fundraising practices, use of funds, complaint history, etc. One is the “Wise Giving Guide” by the Better Business Bureau, and another is the “Charity Rating Guide” by the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP). As far as the financials of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army go, the…   more ›
