Children and parents gathered at the Ida Lee Recreation Center on Sunday to learn how to make gingerbread houses

 About half a dozen families gathered at Ida Lee Recreation Center on Sunday for a make-your-own gingerbread house class, allowing children from ages 4 – 9 a chance to enjoying constructing their own confectionary homes. Instructor Ali Gillingham has been running the class for the past three years, and says it's popular because parents get to leave the mess of the gingerbread house construction behind. "It's nice to just take the house home when it's done," she said. Several children took advantage of the excuse to eat as much candy as possible. Sydni and Sofia Pistolesi, 4-year-old twins, were more hands-off when it came to construction, saying that decorating was their favorite part. "And mommy not yelling at me for eating all of the …

Getting Out in Leesburg

In this edition of Getting Out in Leesburg, I visit Brandon Park, one of the newer playgrounds in town.

 While there are certainly times when you want to pile the kids into the car and make a day of going to the park, it's certainly nice to have one within walking distance. Many of the housing developments have playgrounds, but that's certainly not true of everywhere in town. Growing up in Leesburg, we didn't happen to live near a playground. It didn't matter to me at the time, but now that I'm back and have a child of my own, I was pleased to find out that one had been built on Harrison Street. Brandon Park, located at 878 Harrison St., isn't the largest or most elaborate playground in the world, but it took a space that has been empty and unused for years, and made it into a nice place to take your kids.
