One for the Dogs: Proposed Zoning Amendment Would Allow More Dog Parks

Supervisors re-initiate change that would permit such facilities in Lansdowne, South Riding, PD-H communities.

In response to the plight of communities stymied by county zoning, two members of the Loudoun Board of Supervisors will ask their colleagues Wednesday to consider amending the county’s zoning ordinance to permit dog parks in Planned Development-Housing districts. Stevens Miller, the immediate past supervisor of the Dulles District, first initiated the amendment in 2011. The current board removed the item from its work plan in 2012, but Supervisors Ralph Buona (Ashburn-R) and Matt Letoureau (R-Dulles) have called for its revival in response to requests by the Lansdowne Village Greens and South Riding communities. The board meeting begins at 4 p.m. May 15 at the County Government Center in Leesburg. Get the agenda and other documents related…

New Spec Office Space Breaks Ground in Lansdowne

Elected officials say it’s further proof of growing economic development activity in Loudoun County.

Buckeye Development on Thursday broke ground on a three-story, 54,000 square-foot Class-A office building in Lansdowne, drawing a range of elected officials who called it a sign of increasing business activity in Loudoun County. Phil Canada, president of Lansdowne Real Estate Company, said the building would offer condos for lease or sale with sizes ranging from 1,100 square feet to 18,000 square feet. He said builder Buckeye Development has built 425,000 square feet of commercial space in Lansdowne. “We’re excited to pick up on the growing trend of market activity,” Canada said. While businesses often seek existing space to move into, developers in Loudoun had been hesitant for several years to move forward until the economy steadied. “It…

California Prison Escapee Arrested in Lansdowne

Carolyn Macy, 67, was arrested by members of the LCSO last week, 12 years after her escape.

A woman who escaped from a Los Angeles detention center 12 years ago was arrested last week in Lansdowne by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Carolyn Macy, 67, was found and arrested at Leisure World after the sheriff's office received a tip she had been living there. According to the LCSO, Macy was sent to state prison in Santa Clara County, Calif. on May 25, 1999 for a three-year sentence on fraud and identity theft charges. She escaped custody in February 2000 after she was transferred to another facility. Members of the LCSO and the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office took Macy into custody at her home Oct. 26 without incident. She is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on a felony extradition …

LTE: OpenBand Lawsuit ‘Absurd’

Lansdowne residents says ‘E’ is for ‘Egregious,’ ‘Extortion’ and ‘Ethics.’

The absurd action by OpenBand (OB) in which it has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and other parties concerning the board's recent decision not to renewal its franchise (as reported in the Loudoun Times Mirror on Oct. 11, 2012) should come as no surprise to anyone! Instead of OB recognizing and accepting the fact that the majority of its subscribers are fed up with its dismal service and trying to settle their legitimate gripes in a fair and equitable manner, OB turns around and files a massive lawsuit against the very government body, of which two of its members went "over and beyond the call of duty” in their effort to assist in resolving. And talk about the "pot calling the kettle …

Planning Commission to Keep Studying HS-8

After joint hearing with the board of supervisors, commissioners now have task of addressing concerns raised by Lansdowne residents.

The Loudoun Planning Commission voted Wednesday night to continue studying a series of land use applications related to a high school proposed in Lansdowne and intended to primarily relieve Broad Run and Stone Bridge high schools. Just more than a dozen speakers, through their comments, showed the range of feelings Lansdowne residents have about plans to build HS-8 next to Belmont Ridge Middle School and the National Conference Center. The comments came during a joint Loudoun Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission public hearing. Traffic and safety were the top concerns raised during Wednesday’s public hearing about a series of land use applications related to the proposal. Supporters said they liked the idea of a school within the …

Hearing on Lansdowne High School July 18

On Wednesday, the Loudoun Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors have planned a joint meeting about required approvals.

A series of land use applications required to move forward with a high school next Belmont Ridge Middle School in Lansdowne heads to a joint public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the middle school. The school, called HS-8 on the county’s Capital Improvement Plan, would occupy land consolidated around property the county purchased from the National Conference Center. Constructing the high school will mean removing the existing community park and rearranging the Belmont Ridge Middle site. See the maps at right for detailed views of the site plans. Two entrances are currently planned: the main one from Upper Belmont Place Road, which is an extension of the north end of Belmont Ridge Road; and the other off Kipheart Drive. The proposed site, …

BCan's point of view is not uncommon and has some merit but I would not use Fairfax county high schools as more than points of comparison, not real yardsticks. They are more diverse in size, facilities and programs than Loudoun and they are not that fantastic as schools. Large Faifax high schools like Robinson (which they call a secondary school because it has grades 7 or 8 to 12 under one roof) …   more ›

LCSO Investigates Burglaries in Lansdowne Area

Residents are reminded to secure windows, doors and vehicles.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to secure their homes and vehicles after three burglaries took place in the Lansdowne area last week. On July 13, deputies responded to homes on Scenic Creek Way, Lecroy Circle and Parallel Bluffs Court. The three homes were entered during the overnight hours and wallets, cell phones and other small electronics were taken. In two of the burglaries, a door to the home was left unlocked and likely the point of entry for the suspect(s). In a third burglary on Parallel Bluffs Court, the suspect(s) entered an unlocked vehicle parked outside the home and used a garage door remote to open the garage door and gain entry into the home. In light of these cases, members of the Loudoun County …

Residential Sprinkler Prevents Potentially Devastating Fire

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the Lansdowne fire was accidental and estimated $10,000 damage.

A small fire broke out on a kitchen stove in a condominium at 19375 Cypress Ridge Terrace in Lansdowne on Saturday, May 12. Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m.  Units responding from Lansdowne and Ashburn arrived on the scene to find that the fire, in a ninth-floor unit, had been extinguished by the sprinkler system.   There was some water damage until the sprinkler could be shut off, but the sprinkler may have saved lives and kept the property loss to a minimum. The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the fire, which resulted in estimated $10,000 damage, was accidental.  The residents of the apartment were relocated by the property management and no other resident …
