Supervisors OK stadium for Loudoun Hounds and Virginia Cavalry FC; teams shooting for 2014 seasons.
UPDATED: Changes are in italics. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a 5,500-seat ballpark at One Loudoun Wednesday night. The request came to move the ballpark from Kincora to One Loudoun because of delays at Kincora. Supervisors expedited the request in an attempt to keep the Loudoun Hounds, a professional baseball club, on track for a 2014 season. The Virginia Cavalry FC, an expansion team with the North American Soccer League, also plans to call the One Loudoun ballpark its home. With the Loudoun Board of Supervisors set to vote April 3 on an expedited review of land use changes at One Loudoun that would permit a ballpark for professional sports and community events, supervisors participated in tests Friday to test the impact fireworks displays will have on residents and a heron rookery. The tests seemed to indicate that passing airplanes and trucks produce more noise than fireworks. “The loudest sound we detected over there was me trekking through the brush,” said County Chairman Scott K. A proposal to permit a 5,500-seat ballpark in One Loudoun that would double as the home for both professional baseball and soccer teams is set for an April 3 vote by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. Dozens of speakers and observers attended a public hearing Monday night at Farmwell Station Middle School to voice their support or concerns. Transportation and noise remained top concerns not just because of games, but also because of the 17 concerts that would be permitted each year, under the current proposal. Loudoun residents are invited to speak tonight about the proposal to permit a 5,500-seat stadium where concerts could also be held at the southwest corner of Loudoun County Parkway and Route 7. The Loudoun Board of Supervisors scheduled the public hearing – which begins at 6 p.m. at Farmwell Station Middle School, 44281 Gloucester Parkway in Ashburn – which is closer to the ballpark site than the county boardroom. Opponents are not buying assertions that Loudoun professional sports rely on a ballpark at the development.
As the Loudoun Planning Commission wades through a proposal to permit a 5,500-seat stadium in the One Loudoun development, the case supporters appear to be developing is that Loudoun could miss its opportunity to land two professionals sports teams. Opponents of the ballpark aren't buying it. Those against the park – whose concerns include noise, lights, traffic and the loss of planned office space – turned out along with supporters for a public hearing Tuesday night in Leesburg. One Loudoun developers Miller & Smith and North American Sekisui House LLC requested the land use changes to permit 5,500-seat stadium at Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway after delays at the Kincora development to the east forced the Hounds to consider alternatives. The professional soccer team that will share a ballpark with the Loudoun Hounds allowed local residents to help pick the name and logo.
NASL Virginia plans to release the name and logo of Northern Virginia's professional soccer franchise at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 6 at Bungalow Lakehouse in Sterling The announcement coincides with a viewing party of the U.S. Men's National Team's qualifier versus Honduras. The game begins at 3:30 p.m., with the unveiling set for halftime, around 5:45 p.m. NBC Sports personality Russ Thaler will serve as host, and D.C. United greats John Harkes and Mark Simpson plan to attend. Let’s say that an application were to be filed with the appropriate county authorities to build a 10,000-person sports stadium and entertainment complex at the Reston Town Center. What do you think might happen? Would the local residences and businesses there welcome the sporting arena to their neighborhood with open arms, or would they be so outraged at the idea that they would organize to have the plan defeated? The question isn’t so far-fetched. To the editor: When I bought in the Potomac Green development five years ago I was excited to learn that in time One Loudoun would bring development to the area that would include business, residential development and entertainment. In part my decision to buy in Potomac Green was that I knew that in time the One Loudoun expansion would add to the property value of its neighbors. I am now even more excited about the proposed construction of a baseball/soccer facility that will be the home of the Loudoun Hounds and an NASL soccer team. I served as the Public Address announcer for DC’s Major League Soccer team, DC United, from 2004 to 2011.
