The LCDC gives its support to the board for taking action as investigation continues.
The Loudoun County Democratic Committee issued the following statement today regarding the Loudoun Board of Supervisors’ removal of Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) from standing committees. The move, which received a response from Delgaudio’s attorney, denies Delgaudio a vote in board committees, but does not bar him from attending meetings. Here is the full LCDC statement: Last night, the Loudoun Board of Supervisors stripped Sterling Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio of his committee assignments. LCDC Chair Evan Macbeth made the following statement in response to this action: “Serious allegations of wrongdoing were lodged against Sterling Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio last March, and revealed to Board Chairman Scott York within days. Chairman York…
Controversies over rail decision and Sterling District supervisor were top issues of board’s first year.
Two issues dominated the first year of the current Loudoun County Board of Supervisors’ lineup – the question of whether to approve extending Metrorail’s Silver Line to Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County, and charges surrounding Sterling District Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio. Metrorail The Metrorail decision was not only the Board’s most important decision of the 2012, it may have been the most significant in decades. Seen as a major economic development stimulus by the business community – and some supervisors – it was also strenuously opposed by many residents for a variety of reasons, most notably the cost of the project and means of financing it. With an all-Republican board that placed a high priority on economic development, one …

The panel makes planning decisions for the National Capital Region.
Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott K. York this month was elected chairman of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) for 2013. Tommy Wells of the District of Columbia will serve as first vice chair, while Patrick Wojahn of the City of College Park will serve as second vice chair. “I look forward to the opportunity to lead the TPB, which plays a significant role as the regional forum for transportation planning,” York said in a press release. Members of the TPB include representatives of the region’s local governments, including Loudoun County; state transportation agencies; the Maryland and Virginia General Assemblies; the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority; and non-voting members from …

The lawyer for the Sterling supervisor responds to comments at York’s town hall meeting.
Responding to the discussion at the town hall meeting hosted by the Hon. Scott K. York, Charlie King, attorney for Supervisor Delgaudio, issued the following response: If anybody warned Chairman York last Tuesday’s meeting was a bad idea, he should have listened. Since the Chairman admitted keeping Ms. Mateer’s documents was his decision alone, his remarks dispel any notion Supervisor Delgaudio acted behind the scenes to derail an inquiry. Since when is the Chairman's file cabinet an evidence locker? His mistaken belief he could keep the documents because he expected the prosecutor to call Ms. Mateer would be plausible for a few weeks, but not longer. As the Chairman said he started the investigation, there are now two official versions of…

Speakers at town hall meeting critical of Loudoun board chairman’s actions.
After canceling a meeting set to focus on the investigation of Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) for work he asked his aides to do, County Chairman Scott K. York (R-At Large) took an earful from residents concerned with his handling of the complaint against Delgaudio. The primary concern centers on when York received documents related to the complaint and why he did not turn them over to a special prosecutor in the spring. That special prosecutor is examining the complaint once again, this time with the full package of documents Delgaudio’s former aide provided to the county. York told a gathering at the County Administration Building in Leesburg Tuesday night he had no idea when the investigation would wrap up, but that a similar …

The left critical of all-GOP board, continues pursuit of action following allegations against Sterling supervisor.
The cancellation of a Nov. 20 Loudoun Board of Supervisors meeting regarding allegations against Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) has county Democrats and a local political action committee crying foul. A town hall meeting has been planned instead from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the County Government Center in Leesburg. Supervisor Shawn Williams (R-Broad Run) had intended to call on the board to strip Delgaudio of his board committee duties during a special prosecutor’s investigation of the supervisor, but he will not be able to make such a motion during the town hall meeting. Real Advocate — a political action committee made up of former members of the Loudoun County Democratic Committee and clearly a nod to Delgaudio's private …

Board of Supervisors chairman is paying the price for his endorsement of Delgaudio.
Last year, Board of Supervisors chairman Scott York raised some eyebrows when he endorsed his controversial colleague Eugene Delgaudio for re-election to the board, despite the fact that York and Delgaudio had often clashed openly during their 12 years together on the board. York also openly wished for an all-Republican board. As my mother likes to say, “Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.” York got his wish, and now Delgaudio has become his thorniest problem. On September 25, the Washington Post reported that Donna Mateer, a former aide, accused Delgaudio with improperly using her services – while she was being paid by the county government – for campaign fundraising activities. She also said Delgaudio’s rants directed at his …

Eugene Delgaudio is becoming the most visible – and notorious – person in the county.
In November 2011, Scott York received 31,942 votes in his race for chairman of the Board of Supervisors. Roger Zurn, running unopposed, got 45,807 votes for county treasurer. Of those candidates who won district seats on the Board of Supervisors, the leading vote-getters were Geary Higgins, who received 4,473 votes, and Janet Clarke, with 4,435. At the other end of the spectrum were two candidates, each of whom ran in a three-way race – Shawn Williams (2,354 votes) and Eugene Delgaudio (2,836). Yes, less than three thousand Sterling District voters – less than one percent of the county’s total population – handed Delgaudio a fourth term on the Board. Nevertheless, one can make a pretty good case that Delgaudio, more than York, Zurn or …

The Selling of Metro The hard battle to inform the public on the costs and risks of Metro to Loudoun is being fought. In this complicated mix of opinions and messages there is cause to doubt that enough attention has been given to very basic considerations. At the top of that list is the question of whether or not a heavy rail commuter line that is a match for the transit needs of the Washington Metropolitan area is also a fit for shuttling a few hundred passengers a day back and forth to catch a flight out of Dulles Airport. Here in Loudoun there is a massive effort to sell the train as a plus to Loudoun. Many supposed benefits have already been refuted yet they are still called benefits. One example is that there will be a financial …

The Board of Supervisors has declared May as Hunger Awareness Month. In response, Supervisor Scott York's challenged employees to "pack his office" full of food for the upcoming donation.
More than 4,000 pounds of food was donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief's food pantry on Friday, May 11 in response to Supervisor Scott York's recent challenge to "pack his office" full of food in support of Hunger Awareness Month. Loudoun County employees packed his office with a little more than 3,300 pounds of food. Some employees took their donations directly to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, which raised the staff’s contribution. Last Friday, several employees of the Department of General Services helped to deliver the food to Loudoun Interfaith Relief. "That was amazing I've got to say. I didn't expect so much to come in," said Director of Operations David Dwyer. "This time of year we start our summer pack program so in adition to the …
