Nonpartisan in Name Only?

Party endorsements of candidates in “nonpartisan” town council election put some at a disadvantage.

In this year’s election for the Leesburg Town Council, two candidates – Katie Hammler and S. Ann Robinson – may be at a disadvantage because they did not seek the endorsement of either political party. Other candidates appear to have lined up endorsements from one party or the other. That doesn’t seem quite right, since Leesburg’s town council elections are officially nonpartisan. Robinson said that she did not seek endorsement from either political party “due to the inherent strings attached, which are contrary to good local government.” Hammler said that she was “dedicated to the spirit of our nonpartisan elections with the singular mission to serve the Leesburg taxpayer.” “It has been a great opportunity to differentiate myself because …

Leesburg Town Council elections have historically been nonpartisan but when it as decided by the voters recently to change the town elections from May to November , this effectively killed the nonpartisanship of these elections. As I understand it, the stated intent of proponents was to save money(combining elections) and to improve voter turn-out, which historically was below 20%. However, those…   more ›

If I were Glenn Beck, I would say," is it only me or does anyone else think that it is wrong for the Town AND the State(county) to tax our cars every year???" You NEED a car so why TAX it??? We in Leebsurg pay TWICE, while others living in Loudoun County pay only once and drive on our roads. Another essential is FOOD. Why do we pay a sales tax on food? It is more essntial than cars. Suggestion, …   more ›

Tally Ho Theater to Provide New Opportunities

Music and cultural events to anchor the future of venerable location.

Last week's announcement that the Tally Ho Theater would be closing was met with a mixture of sadness, surprise and speculation, in the form of what the future may hold for the venerable location. Town of Leesburg representatives, including staff from Economic Development, have spoken with the owner of the venue, Don Devine, regularly about the project, and speculation has been replaced with optimism as he laid out the future plans of the Tally Ho. “We are excited about the future,” Devine said. “Excited about providing a venue for music and cultural events in Leesburg, as well as the prospect for a continued movie presence in the downtown.” Devine said that there would be potential opportunities for the Loudoun Symphony, as well as other …

Council Shows Little Interest in Pipeline Involvement

Members of the Town Council shared their thoughts regarding the Raspberry Falls water supply following an update from Loudoun Water Monday night.

Members of the Leesburg Town Council were divided Monday night as they shared their thoughts and concerns regarding the Raspberry Falls community and its water supply. Approximately 140 homes are located within the community, which has a water system operated by Loudoun Water with two communal wells as the water source.  One of the two wells (PW-1) serving the community was shut down November 16, 2011 after the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) determined the well was groundwater under the direct influence of surface water or GUDI.  Though it was stated that the water supply is safe for those in the local community, staff was directed to look at long-term options. Options included a membrane filtration for the well and a connection to …
