Field hockey makes its debut on a Loudoun County Public Schools field as clubs from Briar Woods, Dominion square off.
Potomac Field Hockey (PFH), a local private club, hopes to put a spotlight on the sport in Loudoun with a game between county teams played at Dominion High School’s stadium. Loudoun County's high schools have no field hockey teams, local club teams play under their school banners. The public school systems in several neighboring counties offer field hockey, but Loudoun County Public Schools has not adopted the sport, nor its sister sport ice hockey, which is also played under high school banners through private clubs. Representatives for Potomac Field Hockey say the game, set for 7:30 p.m. May 18, will be the first ever played on an LCPS field and credit Dominion Principal John Brewer, Athletic Director Joe Fleming and Assistant Principal …

Brambleton appears to be primary community that will be split between high schools; most kept whole.
The Loudoun County School Board voted 7-2 Tuesday night to adopt a slightly altered version of one of several boundary maps under consideration for Ashburn and Dulles North. The final plan kept most communities together at one high school, with the exception of Brambleton, which will be divided at Ryan Road. School board members said the plan moved the fewest students of the plans under consideration. Brambleton students living north of Ryan Road will continue to attend Briar Woods along with students from Broadlands, while those south of Ryan Road will attend the as-yet-unnamed high school planned in Loudoun Valley Estates. The board did not decide whether to permit a grandfathering clause for current students. Board members Jill Turgeon…

Students learn about careers they are interested, including some of the less exciting aspects.

Parents and teachers begin asking, “What do you want to do after high school?” Each year Loudoun County Public Schools and the Loudoun School-Business Partnership Executive Council organizes a Job-For-A-Day Program. On Wednesday, 400 high school juniors from around the county had an opportunity to explore various fields of work. Something is broken in the system used to determine school boundaries in Loudoun County. In the midst of the boundary hearings, school planning zones are being split when new plans are announced, walk zones are being established without safety review or public input, and HOA has become the “official” definition of community. School Board Bylaws 2-32 list in order the initial considerations to be considered when making changes to boundaries. They are as follows: When Proximity is ignored, Trailside Middle School is not the middle school that Newton-Lee Elementary School students will attend. These two schools are located on the same site, are just 70 feet apart, share a common entrance, and will be required to share fields, parking, etc. …

This isn't a sign of a functioning board. It's only a sign that the majority got everything they wanted by splitting up the minority. I would consider that a criminal board. Broadlands should build it's own HS instead of stealing the HS from other communities!   more ›
