Annual event Monday commemorates civil rights leader
On Monday, the 21st annual march and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday returns to Leesburg, starting at 10:30 a.m. The march will begin at the Loudoun County Courthouse and follow Market Street east to the Douglass Community Center at 407 E. Market St. Traditionally community groups walk carrying banners and signs to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme this year is “Moving Forward with the Dream for All”. A program will follow at the Douglass Community Center. The keynote speaker for the celebration is Deborah L. Parker of Leesburg, an inspirational speaker and author. The event is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for Loudoun Interfaith Relief.
The town’s 10th Annual Freeze Your Gizzard 5K Cross Country Race will be held Saturday at Ida Lee Park. Both a 5K and 1-mile fun run are scheduled. In the past, the event has attracted more than 600 participants and this year shouldn’t be any different, according to Rachael Goodwin, special events supervisor. “This is our 10th anniversary so we are looking to have a really strong attendance,” Goodwin said. “I would expect between 800 and 900 runners.” This year’s race will start and finish at the gazebo in the front field of Ida Lee Park. Make a Difference Day was celebrated on Oct. 26 in Leesburg.
Volunteer Loudoun came together to celebrate Make a Difference Day at the Leesburg Armory on Saturday. Board of Directors Mary Maddox said that 57 Loudoun County schools and 150 volunteers, residents and businesses connected with local nonprofits during the event. They were able to learn about each group's mission while helping with meaningful service projects. Quilts were made for disabled veterans, ribbons were tied for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and thank you gifts were put together for The Loudoun Free Clinic’s medical staffers. More than 22,000 pounds of food was collected for Loudoun Interfaith Relief’s food pantry, organizers said. Up to three boxes or bags of documents will be accepted for shredding at LCHS this Saturday.
The Town of Leesburg’s Public Works Department will host its next semi-annual free community document-shredding event on Saturday at Loudoun County High School, in Leesburg. Residents may bring up to three boxes or bags of documents, each equivalent in size to a standard file storage box. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cars must be in line by 12:45 p.m. to ensure service. During the event, the town will sponsor a food drive to benefit Loudoun Interfaith Relief. Residents are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate and LCHS students will be on hand to assist with the collection of donations. The Board of Supervisors has declared May as Hunger Awareness Month. In response, Supervisor Scott York's challenged employees to "pack his office" full of food for the upcoming donation.
More than 4,000 pounds of food was donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief's food pantry on Friday, May 11 in response to Supervisor Scott York's recent challenge to "pack his office" full of food in support of Hunger Awareness Month. Loudoun County employees packed his office with a little more than 3,300 pounds of food. Some employees took their donations directly to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, which raised the staff’s contribution. The Loudoun Chapter of the Virginia Women Attorney’s Association presented Loudoun Interfaith Relief with a check for $3,400 as the net proceeds of the chapter's successful Empty Bowls Fundraiser. The presentation took place on March 21 at the Loudoun County Bar Association luncheon. The association ran a food drive before the presentation with a large response from the legal community in Loudoun. The recent Empty Bowls Fundraiser coincided with holiday events in Leesburg on Dec. 10, 2011. The fundraiser is an annual event where local potters hand-throw bowls and donate them to VWAA-Loudoun. The Town of Leesburg Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Loudoun Interfaith Relief to offer its 6th annual charity dance and food drive at Ida Lee Recreation Center Friday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. Donations of non-perishable food and goods will be collected in lieu of admission to be distributed through Interfaith Relief. Sonak Family Chiropractic & Life Wellness sponsors collection event to aid community.
Saturday’s Family Fun Fest provided tons of fun while raising money for Loudoun Interfaith Relief. Sonak Family Chiropractic & Life Wellness planned the event and invited a few special guests, such as Fetch, the Loudoun Hounds mascot. “When I found out their need for food greatly increased during the summer months, I felt called to help,” said Will Sonak, MD.
